Obama, Merkel discuss European economic crisis, concerted action

U.S. President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday spoke over phone about the European economic crisis, agreeing that "concerted action would be needed," said the White House.

"The two leaders agreed that concerted action would be needed in the months ahead to address the current economic challenges and to assure global economic recovery," the White House said in a statement.

The two also discussed the Middle East peace, and Obama thanked Merkel for "her commitment to the peace process and her personal engagement with the parties to facilitate a return to direct talks, " according to the statement.

On Monday afternoon, Obama is expected to travel to New York to attend the UN General Assembly.
