U.S. reiterates opposition to Palestinian bid at UN
The U.S. government on Monday reiterated its opposition to the Palestinian bid to seek statehood at the United Nations as a possible showdown is nearing at the world organization.
"We remain where we were on the inadvisability of unilateral actions that will bring the Palestinians no closer to the statehood they seek," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.
He said the guiding principle of the Obama administration is to "support the things that move the parties closer together and do not support the things that move them further apart."
Carney insisted that the only way the Israelis and Palestinian will achieve a two-state solution is through direct negotiations.
On last Friday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas announced that after talks with representatives from Arab countries and elsewhere, he has decided to seek full UN statehood for Palestine, based on 1967 borders with Israel.
Abbas is slated to officially announce the bid at a speech to a high-level plenary meeting of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly this Friday.
The U.S., a strong ally of Israel and one of the five permanent members of the 15-nation Council, is likely to use its veto power to thwart the Palestinian bid at the UN Security Council.
However, the Palestinians could bring their case straight to the General Assembly, where it has widespread support. In this scenario though, the Palestinians would only be able to gain non- member observer statehood.
