Philippine gov't soldier killed, 6 others wounded in NPA ambush
A government soldier died and six others were wounded in an ambuscade staged by New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Sorsogon province Thursday morning, several hours after a 24-hour military ceasefire with the rebels ended, the military said.
Maj. Angelo Guzman, spokesman of the military's 6th Infantry Division, said the ambushed troops from the 49th Infantry Battalion were on an anti-insurgency operation when they were waylaid around 9:30 a.m at Cadandanan village, Magallanes town.
The rebels, numbering about 20 men, ambushed the soldiers aboard a military truck, said Guzman.
"The troops courageously engaged the rebels in a 30-minute firefight before the rebels withdrew in fear of government reinforcements. The encounter left one soldier dead and six wounded," said Guzman, adding the wounded were given prompt medical attention and pursuit operations were continuing.
The NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, has been waging a guerrilla campaign in the countryside for more than four decades. The Philippine military estimates that there are over 4,000 NPA guerrilla fighters scattered in more than 60 provinces throughout the country.
