Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed condolences to the families of those killed in a disastrous collision between a speeding train and a bus full of people in the wee hours of Thursday in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
Singh announced ex-gratia relief of 200,000 rupees (4,000 U.S. dollars) for the kin of each person killed, 50,000 rupees (1,000 U.S. dollars) each for seriously injured and 10,000 rupees (200 U.S. dollars) each for those with simple injuries.
Singh, who holds the Railway portfolio, also ordered a high- level inquiry by the Commissioner of Rail Safety into the mishap.
At least 33 people were killed and 35 others injured when a train rammed into a bus carrying a marriage party at an unmanned crossing in Uttar Pradesh's Kanshi Ram Nagar.
"The accident occurred when the train on its way from Mathura to Chapra in Bihar rammed into the bus carrying people from Adupura village at the crossing in Dariyawganj area," Additional Superintendent of Police Daddan Prasad said here.
"At least 33 people have been killed and 35 others injured in the mishap," he stated, informing that the bus was carrying a total of 68 passengers.
The injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Etah and Farukkhabad districts of Uttar Pradesh.
"The injured have been taken care of and they are now in various hospitals. Everybody is out of danger," Prasad said.
Many people sitting on the roof of the bus were thrown off in the impact of the collision before the vehicle had come to a halt at the crossing after its axle broke.
Local TV showed footage of policemen carrying bodies on stretchers from the wreckage of the bus.
Train mishaps are common in India which has one of the world's busiest railway networks.
